With Spring in full swing, entertaining and gathering friends are the perfect way to celebrate the arrival of warm weather and a new season. Spring is such a versatile time of year when it comes to wine, food and entertaining. With the start of the spring season you want to drink more white wines and lighter red wines. It’s a time of year for barbecues and backyard entertaining. Cakebread Cellars are classic Napa Valley wines that offer quality, variety and premium wines, no matter what the occasion.
Cakebread Cellars was founded in 1973 and is one of the most iconic wineries in Napa Valley. Cakebread wines represent warmth and gracious hospitality, making them the ideal wines for entertaining and celebrating.
Cakebread Cellars is family owned and operated, founded by Jack and Dolores Cakebread. From Oakland, Jack Cakebread operated a car repair business called Cakebread’s Garage. With a trip to Napa Valley, Jack fell in love with the region, and set out to purchase the property the very next day.
With over 40 vintages under their helm, Cakebread is one of the most recognized brand in Napa Valley, and their wines are sold worldwide. The winery has grown in scale but is still family run. On a day-to-day basis there are at least seven Cakebread family members running the winery. Today the second generation is now at the helm, with Dennis Cakebread as co-owner and Chairman of the board.
The winery has vineyards throughout Napa Valley. Originating in Rutherford in what were originally just pastures, the first 22 acres were purchased in 1972. Then over the years they acquired additional vineyards throughout the Valley and the North Coast. Today Cakebread is comprised of 15 sites and 584 planted acres, allowing them full access and control over the quality of fruit and the wines they make.
Cakebread wines come to mind for springtime entertaining because the Cakebreads are known for their generous hospitality. Dolores Cakebread has a passion for gardening and cooking. Dolores completed the professional cooking curriculum at Le Cordon Rouge in San Rafael. It is there she learned to utilize fresh produce from The Cakebread Cellar’s family garden, which has led Cakebread to be at the forefront of the American healthy eating movement in the early 1980’s.
Aromatic wines help ring in the bright spring season. They pair well with the lighter dishes of the spring season. Chardonnay and Pinot Noir are perfect choices.
