If there is one wine region in the world that everyone knows, it is Bordeaux. Bordeaux is home to some of the most illustrious Châteaux producing some of the highest quality wines in the world. Many wine drinkers know the prestigious five first growths of Bordeaux, but think the wines are out of reach in terms of price and need to be cellared for decades. This maybe the case for many of Bordeaux wines, but one of the first growths, Domaines Barons de Rothschild (Lafite), has created a line of wines that are affordable and approachable. Légende wines are made with the same care and attention to detail as is applied to the Grands Vins.
Légende Bordeaux Rouge 2016 ($17.99) – A wine for every day, dinner with friends, or a glass in front of the fire, Légende Bordeaux Rouge is a well-balanced blend of traditional grape varieties. The Cabernet Sauvignon gives the wine the classic elegance of the Lafite style, while the aging gives it charm and a well-rounded character. On the palate, the wine is structured, round and easy, nicely oaked with firm, silky tannins, and a long, fresh and fruity finish.
Légende Pauillac 2015 ($49.99) – This is my favorite wine from the Légende line of wines. Paulliac is home to three of the five first growths of Bordeaux. Pauillac boasts exceptional terroir that is characterized by gravelly hilltops on a clay subsoil which ensures natural drainage and encourages the vines to develop deep roots – these are the perfect conditions for Cabernet Sauvignon. Pauillac is partly made from grapes grown in Domaines Barons de Rothschild (Lafite)’s own vineyards and the wines are made with the same attention to detail as the Grand Vin. Their structure is less concentrated than their prestigious elders, allowing them to age quickly, and after just a few months in bottle; they offer an original, unique style, with the fullness and complexity for which the appellation is renowned. A powerful, structured wine, with well-integrated tannins and a long aromatic black pepper, licorice finish.
The wines don’t require any aging and are meant to be consumed immediately on purchase. No need to save these wines for a special occasion. There are no aging requirements for theses beautiful wines. So if you don’t have the patience to wait 10, 20 or sometimes 30 years to enjoy a bottle of Bordeaux, then these wines are sure to appeal to you.
Paired with hearty warm dishes, or on its own with a good book by the fireplace – you will certainly find Légende wines to be the perfect cold weather wines to appreciate and understand Bordeaux. Don’t be mistaken though, I love my Bordeaux wines year round, and these are surely to hit the note, no matter what the season.
